RL is starting to get in the way of things. Or maybe VR is... one or the other. However I should have something for Monday or Tuesday.

I may have overworked this one a bit, the whole image getting cluttered by that background - detail is nice but not when it starts to draw attention away from the (dare I call it) action. The buildings are just basic two-point perspective with some vague photo references of New York. I don't think I've seen Kon look quite like this but at the same time none of his current depictions seem to suit my style. So this is my Kon-El... Mel-Kon-El, if you will ^_^
I think I'll try something simple next. |

| I suck at art |
[Nov. 5th, 2005|10:49 pm] |
We had guests for a week so I've fallen behind on everything including artwork – all my self-imposed deadlines out the window. But, I have just finished a new piece of comics!Titans slash which I'll post to comics_fanart this week..
I really need to do something for teentitan_slash but my confidence has been shaken.
I had a BB/Cyborg sketch all ready to go which I'd set aside while I finished the last Jinx piece. Thing is, I went back to it a couple of days ago, just to take a look, and it turns out to be the creepiest thing ever! I honestly hadn’t noticed while I was working on it, but now it just feels really awkward. I don’t think there's any way I can save it. Which means I'm at a loose end after I post my Tim pic.
I want to do an Aqualad piece and I was thinking of another Terra pairing, but now I'm sinking into a funk over the BB/C thing, starting to second guess myself on every idea.
Oh, yes! There is good news! I now have teh broadband! :D
I experimented with BitTorrent last night and downloaded the lo-fi version of the latest Teen Titans episode, 'Snowblind'. Thing is my upload limit is pretty tight meaning I can’t seed anything for too long. It would cost an extra €160 a year to get unlimited upload - it doesn’t sound like much until you put it on top of the €420 we're already paying. Ireland sucks at broadband -.-

I've been dipping into my cloud collection again for the background and plasma effects. The bg was created with the blur, motion blur and pallet knife filters, and a couple of gradient layers to give it colour. The plasma used the same cloud photo but with the paint daubs filter (just mess around with the setting and you'll find how I did it). I painted around the rough outline of the shape I wanted first and let the filter decide what to do with it.
And this was also posted to boostle:

| Time Out |
[Sep. 27th, 2005|01:32 am] |
I'm going to have to take a break from the fan art soon, before I burn out on it. I'll have something for teentitan_slash this Wednesday but I don’t have any finished sketches to work on for the following week which pretty much means there won’t be anything. If I start forcing things through now I'll just start producing dross, so it's time to take a step back and work on my own stuff for a while. I'm sure it won't be for too long.
Found this guide to making art through 43Folders which has some excellent advice.
1. Quality through quantity. Don't get hung up on making this one piece good -- make ten and one will certainly be pretty good.
2. Do NOT mix generating and editing. When you're making a piece, don't stop and get judgmental half-way through. If it's a piece of crap, get that piece of crap out of your system -- don't try to fix it mid-flow. Finish it, move on.
[…]
6. "Get through your first 50 failures as fast as you can." I don't think that we should be shooting for a place where we no longer make crappy art. A good artist is one who's in motion making lots of art -- you only think they're so much better because they produce so much quantity that their pile of "good art" has also been able to accumulate. For every piece of crap you create, you're one step closer to getting something you really like. Worth a look if art is your thing.

| Who knows? |
[Sep. 25th, 2005|07:02 pm] |
Well CN finished up season three of Teen Titans last week and who knows how long it will be before season fours turns up (probably dubbed in Irish on TG4). I wonder what the incentive is to delay release in Europe for so long? [ by which I mean, will I find any good torrents of s4 eps when I eventually get broadband and bypass the networks altogether? :p ] I suppose I should be grateful – a month ago I'd only seen ten or so episodes.
Fortunately for me they rolled straight into season two of Justice League Unlimited so I'm good for a couple of weeks.

| Heroic Villains and Villainous Heroes |
[Sep. 23rd, 2005|06:10 pm] |
Posted to teentitan_slash on Wednesday.
This is based on a co-operative alternate universe of TT in which the roles of heroes and villains are reversed.
Title: In'verse Pairing: AU Redwing/Slade Medium: PhotoShop Content: violence, blood, pointy things. Rights: as you please, just give credit.

Here's close up of the R and S in their messy embrace.
( Detail – 459x650 JPEG 101K )
The picture turned out so dark that the chibis are almost lost so here they are on their own.
( Chibis – 400x356 GIF 30K )
I spent way too long detailing this; it got quite obsessive toward the end. I was still making changes literally minutes before I posted it.
I realised half way in that I'd made the mistake of putting two characters with mainly black outfits close together which was going to make them a bit indistinct, that's why I gave the base of Redwing's costume a burgundy hue. The position is a bit strange: Slade is certainly lying on the ground and I think Redwing has him propped up with his right thigh, using his other leg to trap Slade's left shoulder – wow, it's even harder to describe than to draw o.O
The little moth character in pink at the top right is AU Kitten but I don’t have a name for her, Blackfire is in Starfire's outfit, Mammoth and Gizmo are more or less as they are in the show and Jinx, for some reason, is in a sort of mixture of her and Raven's costumes – I'm sure I had a good reason for that when I sketched her ^^' |

After all my hard work this spooky accident of last-minute layer reordering might actually be better than the artwork itself. So it goes :/

I'll post the whole thing later in the usual spot. |

And some detail.
( Detail image behind cut – 459x650 JPEG 103K – NSFW )
Used that cloud trick again for the steam with a gradient overlay on Slade to make him look like he's standing in it. Did you notice I forgot to put teeth on the cogs in the background? The circles were just placeholders, it's such dull task doing cogwheels in vector paths so I decided to leave it for last... then forgot ^^'
Originally I was only going to make Slade a shadow in the background. With the mask on the floor I was going to suggest that maybe he was gone and Robin had replaced him and found his own apprentice. But as I worked Slade became pretty solid, so it's starting to look like that's Robin's new mask; he's become everything Slade wanted and been rewarded for his efforts. It's all very confusing. Still, seems to do it's job o_o

Here's a detail shot just to make reading this post worthwhile.
( Detail image behind cut – 459x650 JPEG 101K – NSFW(?) )
Nice clouds, huh? Well, I cheated... kind of. So here's my PhotoShop Cheat of the Day:
I have a whole directory of digital photos dedicated to clouds. At first I put it together to try and learn how to paint clouds myself, but more recently I've been using it as source material for PhotoShop filters. What I do is pick a section of cloud that looks about right, paint over it if I need a more specific shape and then apply the 'pallet knife' artistic filter to give it a more hand-painted appearance. At this point I might want to use the magic wand selection tool to make the sky transparent or remove dark areas left by the filter. After that I stretch it out to fit the image and give it a little 'gaussian blur' if needed. In this case I applied a gradient overlay to enhance the overall effect. The last thing I do, once the clouds are in just the right place, is select the whole image then crop it to cut away the invisible parts – this makes the file smaller and lets PS run faster. That's about it.
I don't think I have any future as a teacher :p |

| DC Bashing |
[Aug. 29th, 2005|11:48 pm] |
Ever wondered about the legality of your DC slash art? No? Ever thought of selling prints? You may want to wait on that.
Mark Chamberlain has painted a set of homoerotic batman watercolours which are / were (?) being sold from a Chelsea gallery. Now the gallery has received a C&D order from DC Comics requesting not only that they stop selling the paintings but also hand them over to DC along with details of all the sales made so far.
I find it really hard to see what they think they're going to get out of this. Surely Copyright/trademark law was not drafted with this in mind? I'm actually not certain how this is covered by Irish law but in America parody is considered fair-use of copyrighted material – and what is slash art if not parody? DC can't claim lost revenue because they don't sell slash art, so these paintings cannot possibly impact comic sales. If Chamberlain had been creating and selling a comic or comic-derived work pretending to be a legitimate DC licensed material that would be a different matter. But no one looking at those paintings is going to think these are authorised – they can only be satirical.
It's really disappointing to see them acting like this. |

| Is life worth living without Raven slash? |
[Aug. 28th, 2005|01:26 am] |
I posted this NSFW pic to teentitan_slash last week.
Title: Bad Touch Source: Teen Titans Animated Type: Slash Pairing: Raven/Blackfire Medium: PhotoShop. Content: fully clothed, suggestive pose, sneaky hand ;) Rights: As you please, just give credit.
( Full image behind cut – 650x528 121K JPEG – NSFW )
So why would you bother readinglooking at this entry? Well here you get detail! ^_^
( Detail image behind cut – 459x650 63K JPEG – NSFW ) I get the clean cell-shading effect by using PhotoShop's shape layers instead of using the painting tools. For authenticity most of the colours are picked straight from screen caps. The shadows are just a black layer over the top of that set at about 25% transparency. The highlights are usually layers with effects like 'overlay' or 'color dodge' depending on what I need. This is actually the way Adobe Illustrator works – unfortunately I can’t afford AI so I just persuade PS to do the same thing.
I should have another piece of TT slash in few days.
[ I'm posting this in the middle of the night because I just remembered that the power is going to be out here all Sunday. ] |

| Intro |
[Aug. 23rd, 2005|07:24 pm] |
This journal is a way for me to post some of the fan art that I've begun producing recently. I'm not sure yet how this is going to work – I may just be using this profile to post the work to relevant communities, I may x-post here, I may leave stuff here that doesn't fit anywhere else. I guess we'll see.
All artwork is going to appear behind cuts and be preceded by a general description of the content to let you decide if you want to see it. I think I'll be erring on the side of caution when using "NSFW" label.
While I'm producing a lot of slash art you won’t find anything... messy here. There may be some nudity, suggestive posing and a little... er... handling but nothing outright crude (that's just not my thing).
I'm not too good at selling myself, I usually let my work do that. So I'll be light in the bio until I think of something to write there. |
